Your child’s gut and their skin are more connected than you think. Here’s how:

1. The Gut Houses the Immune System

Over 70% of your child’s immune system lives in their gut.

If the gut lining is inflamed (from food sensitivities, poor digestion, or imbalanced bacteria), the immune system can go into “alert mode.” This shows up on the skin as eczema, rashes, or even hives.

2. Leaky Gut = Leaky Skin

When the gut lining becomes too porous — a condition called intestinal permeability — it can allow food particles or toxins to enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammation.

And where does that inflammation show up? Often, the skin.

3. Poor Digestion = Poor Detox

If your child isn’t pooping regularly or their liver and lymphatic system are sluggish, their skin may pick up the slack. The body uses the skin as a backup detox organ — and in kids, this often shows up as chronic rashes.

🧴 Why Creams Alone Don’t Cut It

Creams can absolutely help relieve symptoms. I often recommend soothing topicals as part of a whole-body plan. But here’s the truth:

✨ If you don’t address what’s happening inside the body, the eczema will keep coming back.

We need to ask:

- Is your child digesting food properly?
- Are they reacting to dairy, gluten, eggs, or other foods?
- Is their poop regular and healthy?
- Do they have frequent bloating, gas, or tummy aches?
- Do they catch every cold going around?

These are the clues that tell me we need to go deeper — to the gut, the immune system, and the body’s detox pathways.

👩‍⚕️ What I Do Differently as a Naturopathic Doctor

When I work with parents on eczema, we focus on more than just creams and band-aid solutions.

Together, we:

- Run gentle, kid-friendly assessments of gut and immune health
- Identify and remove common food triggers
- Support regular, healthy bowel movements
- Strengthen the skin from the inside and outside
- Use safe, gentle supplements and home remedies to calm inflammation

💬 Final Thought: You’re Not Failing, Mama

If you’ve been trying your best and your child is still scratching…

If the creams only help for a few days…

If you’re tired of being told they’ll “grow out of it”...

Please know: you’re not alone, and there is a root cause.

Your child’s body isn’t broken. It’s just trying to communicate in the only way it knows how.

And I’d love to help you listen.
