How Sally Conquered Sugar Cravings and Transformed Her Health

In today’s fast-paced world, many of us find solace in sugar.  It’s sweet, comforting, and seemingly harmless.

But, for one of my patients, Sally (not her real name) her love affair with sugar began to take a noticeable toll on her health during perimenopause.   Sally started to noticing trouble losing weight, energy crashes and brain fog.

Sally wanted to transform her health and set a positive example for her family, but she wasn't sure what to do about her sugar cravings.

Sally felt like her sugar cravings were in the way of her success.

She couldn't keep sugar in the house because it seemed that even a little bit lead to wanting more, eating more and then wanting more again.

Sally's story isn't just about beating sugar cravings; it's about reclaiming control over her health.

Sally came to me for help because she'd been to her family doctor and didn't get the specific information she needed to move forward with her health.

I knew Sally was worried about her sugar cravings, so we went to work on that right away, with some basic things you can do too.

This is what we implemented:

1.  Increased Hydration - often craving sugar actually means you need more water.  Our primal bodies are wired to crave certain foods in certain situations.  When we need more water, we crave sweet because sweet whole foods tend to have more water, like fruit.

2.  Focus on protein at breakfast - this helps regulate blood sugar and gives your body what it needs at the right time.  When you choose foods that regulate your blood sugar early in the day, it helps to reduce sugar cravings at night.

3.  Eating leafy greens regularly - this helps balance blood sugar by increasing fibre.  Leafy greens are nutrient-rich and support healthy liver and digestive function.  This food takes up space in your digestive system, simulating hormones that cause you to feel full.

4.  Paying attention to how sugar makes her feel - when Sally actually paid attention to how she was feeling and how food made her feel, she started to notice more and more how sugar caused symptoms she didn't want.  This made it easier, to feel more in control of the choice she was making, when she did choose sugar.  Sally chose to not to eat sugar when she wanted to feel at her best.

Sally overcame her sugar cravings pretty completely, when she added in emotional health and mindset work, which is part of the Release Your Fat Roadmap.
