š© Whatās Your Childās Poop Trying to Tell You?

Yep, weāre going there.
As a children's health focused naturopathic doctor, I talk about poop more than youād expect ā and for good reason.
While it might feel awkward or a little āgross,ā your childās bowel movements are actually one of the most powerful windows into their overall health.
In fact, I often learn more from asking about a childās digestion and bathroom habits than I do from basic lab tests.
So today, I want to teach you how to decode your childās poop ā and what it might be telling you about their immune system, gut health, and even mood.
š§» What You Can Learn from Looking in the Toilet
Letās break it down:
š 1. Frequency
Is your child pooping daily? Every other day? A few times per day?
š Once a day is ideal. Skipping days, holding it in, or going 3+ times per day could signal that their digestion or nervous system needs support.
š© 2. Consistency
Stools should be soft and formed ā not hard pellets, mush, or liquid.
š Hard poops may mean dehydration or low fiber intake, while very loose stools could point to food sensitivities or poor absorption.
šØ 3. Color
Brown is ideal. Green, pale, or very dark can hint at dietary imbalances, digestive issues, or even bile or liver function imbalances.
š If youāre seeing chalky or consistently pale stools, itās worth speaking with your provider.
š 4. Smell
Sure, poop smells ā but extremely foul-smelling stool can indicate that food isnāt being digested properly.
š This is especially important if it comes with bloating, gas, or undigested food in the stool.
š§ Why This Matters
Hereās the thing: digestion is connected to almost everything in your childās body.
That includes:
- Immune health (did you know 70% of immune cells live in the gut?)
- Mood and behaviour (hello, gut-brain connection)
- Skin issues like eczema or rashes
- Nutrient absorption (if your child isnāt digesting well, theyāre not absorbing what they eat)
So when Iām helping a parent figure out why their child is always sick, struggles with skin issues, or has wild mood swings⦠I often start with one question:
"Tell me about their poop."
ā What You Can Do Right Now
If youāre curious whether your childās poop patterns are giving you clues, start by simply observing.
Over the next two weeks, jot down:
- Frequency and time of day
- Consistency and color
- Any strong smells
- Related symptoms like tummy aches, eczema, or behavior changes
This simple habit can uncover so much ā and itās the first step I use with many of the parents I work with.
